Back at my desk

What's better than a three-day weekend? A four-day weekend! That's the inspiration that struck me Thursday afternoon, half an hour before leaving for the day. I had nothing pressing to do at work Friday (publishing is like that, all rush and wait, rush and wait) so I asked for Friday off, and it was all set.

We slept in Friday, then packed and left for the river around 10. In between rush hours, there was only light traffic the entire trip. The weather Friday--in fact the weather the entire weekend--was sunny and in the 70s. Perfect weather.

We spent the extended weekend relaxing. Went out on the boat twice, set up the new hammock (replacing the three-year-old one that finally rotted out), watched movies (I watched Flight of the Living Dead, and it was nowhere near the worst zombie movie I've ever seen; they also get props for the punny title), played pool, and swam a little (pool still too cold to really enjoy, but I had to dive in a few times just because it was there).

We returned home early yesterday, getting back about noon. I delayed lunch, instead putting the new chain on the chainsaw and cutting up the tree in the backyard that fell last week. Not having a fireplace, I really don't have any use for all the wood I cut up. I piled it behind the garage, for lack of a better idea. I'm not talented enough to make chainsaw sculptures of gnomes and sell them at flea markets and craft shows, otherwise I'd have a budding second career.

I cleaned up and popped over to Whole Foods to get meat to grill later in the week. I was handed a coupon for $10 off $40 worth of items in the meat department, which was handy (seeing as that's why I was there and all). I got bison steaks, two New York strips, and two organic chicken breasts (each the size of a freaking football. What do those chickens eat?) and got the $10 off the total bill.

Today it's supposed to be 83 with thunderstorms, so I probably won't be grilling. That's fine. The rest of the week looks sunny and mild.

Snow, but not nearly enough

Well, it's Wednesday, so time for quick recap of the weekend. Had a fun, relaxing time. Saturday I got up early and went to get my car inspected. Then I swung by to pick up the wife and head to IKEA. She wanted a new dresser (we left the beat-up old one in the house we sold in December). She picked one out and I spent part of Saturday afternoon putting it together. Saturday evening we went to visit friends. Since we're so often out of town on the weekends, it's rare we get to meet up with friends. It was a lot of fun. I finished assembling the dresser on Sunday. Watched about 75% of the Superbowl, got bored, and turned the channel.

Woke up this morning to about an inch of snow on the ground. The most we've had all winter! Sigh. What a letdown. Brushed off our cars and came in to work at my regular time.

Lost is finally back tonight, kicking off 16 uninterrupted weeks of new episodes. I hope it doesn't suck. I've been avoiding spoilers since November. It will be interesting to see if the Lost writers have been paying attention to the success of Heroes, and how the writers of that show tell a story. Especially the part about not having to have something happen only in the last five minutes of the episode!
