Six days...

Baby is six days old today! After L fed him this morning she went back to bed and I hung out with him and watched some Sunday morning TV. He and his mom both got a few extra hours of sleep (that his mom especially needed!).

L's father and stepmother drove up from NC to visit this weekend. Her dad brought out a bottle of port from 1956 that hadn't been opened, and he said his first grandchild was the special occasion he'd been waiting for, and he poured glasses for everyone and we toasted the little guy. It was a very sweet gesture, and the 54-year-old port was damn smooth.

L looked up the brand online after they left and a bottle of this port from 1956 retails for between $600 and $1,000. That translates to between $60 and $100 a glass. Wow! Of course, a kid is a momentous event, unless you're a Dugger.

Her folks came to visit again today, and L said I could sneak off to Kettler to see a scrimmage. The training camp for the Washington Capitals began this weekend and their practice rink sits atop the parking garage of the mall barely a mile from our house! Practices are free and open to the public. This weekend, the team was divided into groups (A, B, and C) and they played games against each other.

I was only out for an hour or so, but it was nice to get out. But I was also happy to see the little guy when I got back!

First time in the swing is a success!

Not a lot of action in this video, but he's four days old. What do you expect?

PS, I promise this won't become a daddy blog. I will do my best to live by the adage, "Remember: Your kid is the center of your universe, not the universe!" I'll limit my gushing!

Home, with one person extra!

We were discharged from the hospital today and at 1:30 PM we were all home! Laura got on our bed and I put Henry down beside her, still in the car seat. The dogs hopped up and smelled him, and one of the cats was curious enough to jump up and check him out. He's eaten twice (courtesy of his mom), been burped a few times (courtesy of me), and he got fussy so I took him and watched an episode of Fringe while he slept on my arm. (The second season has 24 episodes over four discs, and I'm getting them one at a time from NetFlix, so I'm trying to burn through it to get the other discs. The third season starts very soon. Why do they only give you a week or two to pick up the season season? Good thing I'm off with a new baby!)

Man, this kid... I can't even process it yet. His cry sounds like a baby pterodactyl, if you can recall what they sound like in movies. And DIG THIS: He's crying right now, and both dogs (including our jumpy rescue dog) are laying on the bed too, completely unfazed. Holy crap. Looks like we're all gonna get along.

STILL WAITING!

We had a nice relaxing day, went to a good lunch, stopped at a bookstore, got some groceries, watched an "eh, okay" movie from NetFlix, and now we're watching a Patton Oswalt stand-up special. Tomorrow could be the day. We're just so happy he didn't come today of all days. Whew!

Holy Halloween, Batman!

Oh, man, now I'm even more excited for this kid.

I want to get this for me:

And we'll clean up the neighborhood (of its candy!)

Baby? No, a cat.

This kid's middle name must be Barnum, because he loves to build the anticipation. Will it be today? Tomorrow? This weekend? The hospital will definitely induce on Monday, so he can't hide much longer.

Oh, and yesterday at the appointment, the kid was hiding and the doc had a hard time finding him to listen to the heartbeat! Finally she found him. I suspect he was giggling at us over that.

So, in lieu of a baby pic, here is Buzz with his favorite toy: a scratching pad on which I sprinkle catnip, with his then proceeds to smother with kisses and claws.

Note the area to the right of the pic where our dog Kirby rests his front paws as he watches people walk by on the sidewalk. He's taken the paint off the trim.

Post Number 1,130

...and it also happens to be our boy's due date, so if he does decide to arrive today, it would be a nice round number.

Laura has had a few contractions this morning, but nothing regular enough to panic... yet!

What a Day!

BEFORE

AFTER

Does this sound normal?

So Laura's due date is tomorrow, and if the kid doesn't spontaneously show up then, the docs will schedule the 13th for L to be induced (giving him one more week to come out). But she woke up today feeling fine so we went and bought a dining room table and four chairs!

A little background: There a warehouse place about 15 minutes from us called Upscale Resale. It's a consignment shop where people sell their furniture. The item gets an initial price, then each day or so it drops another $50 to $70! We went there on Saturday and saw some chairs and a table we liked (on opposite sides of the warehouse).

Here's the ticket from the four chairs:So they were $399.87, then $351.89 when we saw them on Saturday. We decided to wait until Monday and go check again, when they would be $239.92 (we actually toyed with the idea of waiting until tomorrow and getting them for $179.94, but tomorrow is Laura's due date, and we were already kind of pushing it!). These are nice chairs, recently reupholstered. See?

Update: Woo! Delivery was going to cost $100 and was scheduled for Wednesday, but a (non-pregnant) friend responded to Laura's general plea for help on Facebook and we're picking it up ourselves today! I'll post new pics when everything is in the house.

Yay!

Living the life of a shut-in

Added a bunch of stuff to NetFlix streaming: bad '70s and '80s horror movies (one with a young Holly Hunter), some MST3K I actually haven't seen (Monster-A-G0G0 and others), and a bunch of cartoon movies the boy can watch sometime (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs!). Basically sitting around waiting for Laura to go into spasms down there...

I'm am being SO lazy doing this...

Having already posted this link on Twitter and Facebook, I figure why not make it a nerd trifecta and put it here too! Twenty-four seconds of funny.

And from this completely silly post, the next one could be a photo of my kid. HOLY MOLY. If not, hey, three-day weekend!

Got to adjust my thinking

This week has been anxiety filled, mostly because we're down to five days until the due date (and he will definitely be here by the 13th at the absolute latest). I feel the need to get all the "me-focused" thoughts out of my system before he arrives, to stop being selfish, to let go of anger about the state of the world, etc.

And it's making me a little nuts.

I've had a headache the last two days because I think I'm grinding my teeth in my sleep due to stress. I haven't done that since my last job almost eight years ago.

I just want this kid to get here and be okay. Once we get through the first 24 hours, I'm sure the next 18 years will be a snap.

;-)
