Grumble, followed by a resigned shrug
AP: President Bush cast the first veto of his 5 1/2-year presidency Wednesday, rejecting legislation to ease limits on federal funding for research on stem cells obtained from embryos.
Well, no surprise there. He's steadfast in his beliefs. The problem is that his belief is unshakable based on old science. To him, the definition of faith is standing true to your unwavering beliefs, despite any evidence to the contrary. He must think that Bill Frist, the man so Republican that he made a medical evaluation of Terri Shaivo based on an hour of edited videotape, must have lost his mind to come over in favor of stem cell research.
"This bill would support the taking of innocent human life of the hope of finding medical benefits for others. It crosses a moral boundary that our society needs to respect, so I vetoed it," Bush said at a White House event where he was surrounded by 18 families who "adopted" frozen embryos that were not used by other couples, and then used those leftover embryos to have children.
Clever use of propaganda there. I guess Angelina Jolie is going to have to try a little harder to get the word out about all the foreign orphans begging to be adopted. How can they compete with stockpiles of frozen embryos... embryos that will never become persons, when there are 18 families out there willing to "save" an embryo from death by "adopting" it and putting it in a mommy, or a surrogate mommy. These families are more than willing to use cutting-edge medical science when it follows their moral code. I wonder what would happen if one of them needed a liver and got one from a monkey, or an atheist?
So one embryo is more valuable than 100,000 people with Parkinson's disease, but 2,500 dead U.S. soldiers aren't worth more than America's freedom from terrorism? Okay. Just so we're clear on that.
