Vegas pics part 1

First drink of the trip: pomegranate martini

Our hotel suite had a sunken room with a velvet sectional. (Cigar and beer shown)

First win of the trip: $21 on blackjack with a $1 start (That's a winning streak of 20 hands!)

Our hotel: The Pallazo, brand new sister of the Venetian

The ceiling of the Venetian is painted like a lightly clouded sky.
Ambient light from behind the "buildings" ensures that the time is always about 10am inside.

Vegas, baby!

Sunday morning Laura and I are flying out to Sin City for vacation. We're really looking forward to it. Got the pet sitter all lined up, packing the bags tomorrow. I'll be taking pictures, but probably none that will keep me out of the Senate someday!

Hee hee

NASA released a new picture taken by the Mars Rover today. They're trying to figure out what it is they're looking at:

O. M. G.

This is the first time this has happened.

I believe Bill Murray warned us about this in Ghostbusters...

And yeah, Buzz is still a big cat!

Keeping me on my toes

Our basement leaks. You know that. I've mentioned it enough times here. It's not like it's a huge finished basement and I've had to tear up carpet every time it happens. No, it's a 1930s basement, a utility room where your furnace, water heater, and washer and dryer hang out. But we're still going to do something about it.

This Thursday and Friday guys are coming to install a French drain. It requires jack-hammering all the way around the perimeter of the floor, installing the drain, cementing everything over, and installing the water barrier on the walls.

It's been scheduled for weeks now, giving me time to get things ready. I had to move everything in the basement that wasn't a major appliance into the middle of the room. I had to haul some bookcases out to the garage. Last night I ran the last load of laundry we'll be able to do until Saturday at the earliest. But a dry basement? Being able to have the washer and dryer on the floor instead of on pallets? Awesome. And it's supposed to freaking pour on Saturday, so we'll be able to test it right away!

The joys of home ownership.

Sleep well, little guy...

Just read that the Mars rover is on it's last legs. Hope he goes peacefully. The little guy proved there was water on Mars and even detected snowfall on the planet! I'm feeling a little sad about this... (Details HERE.)

Excerpt:

NASA has begun bidding a planned goodbye to its Phoenix Mars Lander. The lander relies on solar panels and the sun's golden touch to reawaken it each day, but a dust storm has hastened the end in the face of the oncoming Martian winter.

Readers can still catch Phoenix's personal Twitter stream from the popular social networking site, complete with robotic tweets such "Space exploration FTW!"

Aw... I may cry...

C'mon!

I promise this won't become an all politics blog, but I have to comment on this. Nader said "Obama has to ask himself if he's going to be Uncle Sam to the country or Uncle Tom to big corporations."

There is NO context in which you can put that that isn't racist. Is Nader feeling so irrelevant he has to make comments like this to get on television? Watch to the very end and catch Nader's final comment. Shepherd Smith from FOX tells him he's out of line. You know you've gone to far when Fox is shocked!
